East Bay Massage: Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that effects the sole of the foot. It is an exceedingly common condition, responsible for up to 95% of all heel pain. Two groups of individuals seem to seek medical treatment for plantar fasciitis: runners, and those of us who carry a bit of extra weight. Other contributing factors include tight calf muscles, flat or pronated feet, and overuse or misalignment of the area.

Luckily, it is a condition that is easy to recognize. Generally speaking, there is pain at the bottom of the foot upon waking and taking the first few steps of the day, progressing into severe soreness at the heel or in the arch after prolonged periods of standing. There seems to be some debate regarding whether the condition is due to a tear in the collagen or due to inflammation.

The good news is that either way you look at it, massage for plantar fasciitis is quite helpful! Releasing tension held in the deeper calf muscles which strain the structure help to relieve painful symptoms, and massage can positively affect the formation of scar tissue.
